In 2016, an aerial photograph taken by H. Krause in the municipality of Aying revealed a large structure that was quickly identified as a late antique fort due to its outline. In cooperation with the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation, the site has been under investigation since 2018.
However, an initial survey conducted in 2018 revealed not only numerous scattered finds from different periods southeast of the known site, but also an area with finds from the Middle Imperial period. The geophysical survey revealed a building complex that could possibly be interpreted as a villa rustica. The test pits dug in 2019 in the area of the fort revealed the excavation trenches of the late antique fort defenses. Further investigations are expected to provide more information about the interior buildings and, above all, the chronology of the complex.
